Losing sight of myself

Jesus said in Mark 8:34 "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross and follow me." In the Amplified version it says, forget, ignore, disown and lose sight of himself and his own interests.

While I don't want to over simplify this thought, it seems to me that the way to do this is just to look at something other than ourselves. I know there is all the stuff about looking inside to find the answers but honestly you are not going to find any answers there unless you have asked Jesus to come into your heart. What you will probably find is a lot of guilt, hurt and pain which Jesus wants to get rid of for you if you will trust Him.

It seems to me that we are pretty good at making things so complicated that we never end up doing it. And of course then, you throw in fear about making mistakes or not doing it well and there you have it, "Stalemate". The truth is, we all find it hard to not look at ourselves and the circumstances we find ourselves in. So how about this?

Let's consider taking short looks away from ourselves to Jesus and others. Focus on helping a friend or even a stranger. Buying a cup of coffee for someone else in line is a big kick and it feels really good. Calling a sick person or donating to a local charity are other ways to look away from yourself. And I'm convinced that if we do these things long enough, before you know it we will have lost sight of ourselves.

Just a thought.
