Finding Your Passion

Last week I promised to tell you why I am writing a blog and why I think people should read it.
Let me start by saying that I never want to come across as a know-it-all. I do not now, or ever will have all the answers. I do, however, have a lot of questions. I look at things that are happening in my life and in others around me and I ponder. I ponder a lot, sometimes too much. This blog then is my way to share my observations and my thoughts.
One thought I have is that to find our passion we have to find our purpose and our gifts and talents. Turns out that finding your passion might not be the best way to say it but I will talk more about that later. I like goals and dreams because they give me something to aim for. This leads me to think about the purpose of this blog and what my goals are in writing it. So I have come up with a short blog manifesto. It will help me to stay on course and you are all welcome to help hold me to it. However, since things change, I do reserve the right to change my blog manifesto. I might interject that a life manifesto would be a good thing, too.  Mine is currently a work in progress, which is code for not done it yet.

Manifesto for Light Thoughts
     1. Share, be open and vulnerable.
When you look at Facebook you see people  eating great food having fun vacations and enjoying family and friends. But we all have our struggles and challenges. No one is perfect but we don't want others to know that. My idea is that if I share my goals, dreams, challenges and shortcomings others will know that they are not alone and we are all more alike than we think. We can help and encourage each other by being honest.
     2. Be light hearted. Our journey to live life well is not an easy one. So let's laugh, relax and enjoy the process. I can never be perfect but I can be happy. I think it is good to laugh at yourself and not carry the weight of the whole world. Somebody else already did that. A while back my sister shared a post that was really good.  It said something like this. Now and again it is good to stop in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.
     3. Give us something to think about. I believe that if we want to change our lives we have to change our way of thinking. I read something recently that said that 98% of the thoughts we think each day are the same as yesterday.  Talk about a rut.  My goal is to challenge all of us to examine how we think and be open to seeing some things in a different light. Pun intended.

Now back to finding your passion.  I read  an article this week by Melissa DeWitte of Stanford News. The title is "Instead of 'finding your passion,' try developing it, Stanford scholars say". I've included the link if you want to see the whole article.
https://news.stanford.edu/2018/06/18/find-passion-may-bad-advice/
The main point of the article is that thinking you can just find your passion and it will be fully formed and ready to go will most likely cause you to give up before you get there. But developing a passion helps you to know that it won't be easy. There will be some trial and error and missteps. But if you are open and persistent you can develop those interests and talents that lead to fulfillment.
So that is what I am doing. I am developing a passion for writing. For now it is up to you, my family and friends, to read my blog and encourage me.  Thank you very much.  I hope your kindness will be rewarded.
For me the most important thing is not the completion of the journey but just knowing that I am headed somewhere good. And if a few people are encouraged to keep going after their dreams by my story, that would be great.
Just a thought
Next week we talk about making mountains out of mole hills. Don't miss "Holy Moley"!
